Carlsbad, CA (Sept. 15, 2010) – With the 2010 NCAA football season now underway, the Upper Deck Company is proud to unveil it newest gridiron card set: 2010 NCAA Sweet Spot Football! A 100-card collection licensed by NFL PLAYERS and the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), the set features, for the first time ever, Upper Deck’s Sweet Spot brand using college logos! What’s more, autographed helmet cards of NFL legends, veterans and rookies – all sporting their college uniforms – are part of the mix with multiple logo variations of each player. Hard-signed autograph cards of Hall of Famers like Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State), Dan Marino (Pittsburgh) and Steve Young (BYU) are included alongside veterans such as Peyton Manning (Tennessee) and first-year standouts Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Tim Tebow (Florida) and Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame).

Inside the product, which hits store shelves today, collectors will be happy to find one hard-signed “Sweet Spot Signature” or “Sweet Swatch” memorabilia card in every pack. There are a total of eight cards per pack, six packs per box, and all autographed cards are hard-signed and foil-numbered. In conjunction with the company’s latest sports card release, Upper Deck is pleased to share a special video production that showcases 15 of this year’s top collegiate football draft picks competing in a “Fight Song” competition hosted by Upper Deck, the winner of which walked away with a pair of signed LeBron James shoes, courtesy of Upper Deck Authenticated. The competition, which took place on May 22 during the annual NFL PLAYERS Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, featured the likes of Bradford, Tebow, Clausen, Colt McCoy (Texas), C.J. Spiller (Clemson) and Ryan Mathews (Fresno State) all giving it the old college try to see whose pipes were the most melodic and whose memory would serve them best. The contest, which included 31 entrants, boiled down to three stellar efforts turned in by McCoy, Clausen and Joe McKnight (USC), but in the end, it was the luck of the Irish (Clausen) that prevailed!

“I appreciate it,” said Notre Dame’s former signal-caller as he accepted his pair of autographed LeBron James shoes. “It was a great fight song, and it was great singing it. And I really appreciate receiving these shoes. Thanks Upper Deck for these LeBron shoes. I’m gonna put them in my house.”

Not only was Clausen’s effort selected as the best overall, but he was also one of the most persistent performers. He offered up four attempts at nailing Notre Dame’s fight song, mostly because his earlier efforts were drowned out by his own enthusiastic clapping.

We got a press release from Upper Deck today about their newest SP Football release. They completely retooled this product and included favorite inserts such as the All Pro Di-Cuts from the 90′s.

We got a box from Upper Deck of 2009 Philadelphia Football. This is a tribute set to the vintage Philadelphia line with some new twists like game used cards and autographs. First pack I opened was the autograph. So was slightly disappointed with that but did get a Albert Haynesworth autograph, Frank Gore and Donavan McNabb game jersey cards.

Upper Deck Captures 2009 NFL Rookies Shaking Their Booties!

Broncos’ rookie running back Knowshon Moreno has all the right moves
to capture trading card company’s inaugural touchdown dance challenge!

Las Vegas, NV (May 28, 2009) – The event started promptly at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. Each of the 34 gridiron rookies participating in the 2009 NFL Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was pumped and ready to get down to business.

Seven Upper Deck photo/film stations were decorated across the western half of the coliseum’s football field, each created to deliver the players in various poses and moods that could be used in upcoming Upper Deck football card products. The event represents the first time Upper Deck can photograph the recently drafted players in their new professional uniforms. Station No. 6 would quickly become the most anticipated station of them all, as players were asked to perform their very own “Touchdown Dance” celebrations on video. As added incentive to get the players involved, Upper Deck offered up a Michael Jordan-signed red Chicago Bulls jersey that would go to the winner (suggested retail price: $1,699.99)!

Appropriately enough, No. 1 overall draft pick Matt Stafford (QB, Georgia) batted leadoff at Station 6, sporting his brand new, baby blue Detroit Lions uniform. He was joined by his two new Lions rookie teammates: Brandon Pettigrew (TE, Oklahoma State) and Derrick Williams (WR, Penn State). A personable, congenial rookie, Stafford provided a six-minute interview while his teammates joked to see who would perform their touchdown dance first. Williams got the nod and quickly impressed a small group of onlookers who started to converge. Pettigrew followed and included the “lawnmower pull” as part of his repertoire.

Stafford then obliged Upper Deck’s video crew with his own interpretation of a touchdown dance, one in which he blew up the goal post using an end zone pylon as his detonator.

“I gave it my best shot,” he said with a smile.

A total of seven groups of players would pass through Upper Deck’s gauntlet of photo stations during the morning session (8 a.m. to 12 noon). Another seven groups would partake during the afternoon session (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.). But it was the touchdown dance competition that kept people talking. When informed the night before about Upper Deck’s Touchdown Dance contest, New York Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez responded: “I don’t dance. What am I gonna do?” When told a Michael Jordan-signed jersey was at stake, he said: “Hmmm, maybe.”

The remainder of the day would hold lots of laughs and original renditions performed by more than 30 of the players. As hip-hop music blared, rookies like the Eagles LeSean McCoy (RB, Pittsburgh), Hakeem Nicks (WR, North Carolina) and Ramses Barden (WR, Cal Poly) of the Giants, and even 310-pound Jason Smith (OT, Baylor) of the Rams all strutted their best dance moves. Titans’ rookie Javon Ringer (RB, Michigan State) even managed a back flip, while Cowboys freshman Stephen McGee (QB, Texas A&M) did his best interpretation of the “robot.” And another Giants rookie, Andre Brown (RB, NC State), actually performed CPR-like, life-saving moves on a football during his turn.

But once all the dust (and grass) had settled, it was Denver Broncos gregarious new recruit Knowshon Moreno (RB, Georgia) who walked away as Upper Deck’s Touchdown Dance Champion. Utilizing bits and pieces of what could have been four separate videos Moreno was awarded top honors, which included a beautiful, laser-engraved crystallized trophy to go along with the coveted Jordan-signed jersey. He not only simulated cutting down a goal post using a football as his chainsaw, but he also managed to poke fun at Stafford, his former Georgia teammate, by striking a Statue of Liberty-like quarterback pose while donning a Stafford jersey.

“I just want to thank Upper Deck,” said Moreno, moments after slipping on his newly earned Jordan jersey. “It’s been great; it’s been a pleasure to be here. And I will be back next year to judge it. All day, baby.”

Upper Deck NFL Draft Preview

2008 Exquisite First Look

Thanks to Beckett.com for providing this first look at 2008 Upper Deck Exquisite Football. This is a set that is the highest of the high end in football, and this years release looks to be one that will not disappoint. Pictures follow after the link!

The cards look fantastic. My only thoughts on them are as follows

A) I wish I would be able to afford the Matt Ryan, I won’t be able to.
B) I really hope with something this high a price point nothing fades with the blue sharpie autographs.
C) I hate the Mannings.

Topps Mayo Undergoes Big Changes

There has been an outcry on the forums about the enormous changes that were made to the inaugural Topps Mayo Checklist. Sites have been extremely unhappy about the changes to the autograph checklist, and the cut signatures as well. Such legends as Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Dan Marino and David Hasselhoff were removed from the set and replaced by the likes of Archie Manning, Wes Welker and Funkmaster Flex.
