Interesting Autograph I picked up today

Working with the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod League I get to work with a great deal of different college athletes. Some of those have been former AFLAC all Americans, and some were members of Team USA. One such example of this was Cecil Tanner from the University of Georgia.

Cecil was on the 18U team in 2008, he had cards featured in 2008 SP Authentic, and the 2008 Team USA Box set that included Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper’s first cards. Cecil was a former Braves Draft pick in the 36th round in 2008. He was ranked 27th among prep prospects in 2008 by Baseball America.

He has one of the most live arms that I have seen in person, although much like Rick Vaughn, sometimes he didn’t know where it was going to go. I’ve always believed in his arm, and that he could be a dominant pitcher down the road. He just needs to calm down on the mound and have fun.

He had two great performances in the Cape League in 2010. He was the Falmouth Commodores Opening Day Starter and dominated the defending Champion Bourne Braves. He also was the pitcher on Falmouth who squared off with Anthony Renaudo in Brewster, he took the loss that day, but was solid through out.

But you can see the card posted above that was signed by Cecil. Well at least one of them was. The card on the left was signed by Cecil, the card on the right however was not. What I can gather is that the players all sat around and did their signing duty for their time with Team USA. You put a group of 18 and under year olds in a room for hours and players are going to end up goofing off over time. Well, it looks like a player on the team may have grabbed at least one of Cecil’s cards, faked Cecil’s name and Upper Deck missed this before inserting it in to the box sets.

I bought it on eBay for 1.30 plus shipping. I won’t be looking to sell it or anything. I have a nice collection of Cecil’s cards, and whether he is a hit at the pro level or not, I consider him a good friend and enjoy having this card that is a little bit off.

Topps released the first images for 2011 Bowman w/ Chrome Baseball. Featuring the first autographs of Bryce Harper in his Nationals Jersey. The tribute to 94 Bowman’s Best, and return of international parallels are highlighted.

Last year 2010 Bowman was the hit product of the year, the first MLB cards of Stephen Strasburg as well as the inclusion of Bryce Harper in the Team USA inserts. Well this year we have inserts of Anthony Rendon, and autographs of Bryce Harper.

We are starting to get the first images out of In The Game’s Baseball release through Twitter. We hope to bring more of these in the up coming days! But for the first card of Yasmani Grandal looks pretty nice, but am not sure if it is a sticker or on card autograph.

We got a press release from Topps on a story that we broke months ago about the WBC being in 2009 Bowman including Yu Darvish, but we recieved the first images today of the card plus some other names that will be in 2009 Bowman which ships in May!

Bowman 2009 First Look

Beckett Blog has revealed the first ever images of 2009 Bowman Baseball. This was the set that we broke the story that Yu Darvish and other WBC Stars would have their first cards featured in. Strong base checklist for this set, it should be a hit as per usual. We also expect a ton of changes to the checklist before it releases on May 11th as well.

Topps released the first images and product preview information for its 2009 Bowman baseball set on Friday.

Set for release on May 11, Bowman will include exclusive World Baseball Classic Bowman Chrome cards as part of the 110-card Bowman Chrome prospect set.

There will be one Bowman Chrome autographed prospect card per hobby box and three autographed cards per HTA jumbo box. The suggested retail price for hobby packs is $3, while jumbo packs will be $10. Jumbo packs will include 32 cards — 17 from the standard set, eight prospects, six Chrome prospects and one parallel.

The basic set will consist of 230 cards, the last 40 rookies and the last 10 of those are signed.
