On the eve of the 2010 World Series we wanted to take a look and predict some of the biggest movers hobby wise as a result of the games. There are players that are already well established hobby forces such as Tim Lincecum, but could he even become bigger with dominant performances in the World Series? His high end stuff is already extremely expensive, and for the most part wrapped up in the collection of our friend in San Francisco. His base chrome autograph has been selling on eBay for around $120 at this point. It could easily top 150 with a dominant game 1 vs Cliff Lee.

Cliff Lee is a player that could also be a great break out with such a limited number of autographed rookie cards out there of him. His total number of autographed rookies over a good deal of products totals around 1,000. His amazing numbers thus far in the playoffs on top of the fact that he may be changing teams to the Yankees this off season provide a very volatile potential market place.

Josh Hamilton is already one of the biggest stars in the baseball world. His 1999 Topps Traded Rookie could potentially skyrocket soon, but he is an interesting case due to the fact that after the Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium in 2008 his cards have already taken one astronomical jump. Could they potentially hit those heights again? Some tape measure shots in to the bay could definitely cause an explosion in his cards.

Neftali Feliz has limited autographs from 2008 all from what’s now known as Panini. He had autographs in the Prime Cuts, Elite, Threads, and Contenders products that year. His most limited are the Contenders and Prime Cuts at around 250 each. They are selling right now around 25 to 30 dollars but that number could easily increase if he lights up the radar gun over 100 in the World Series.

But my pick for the biggest potential breakout of the playoffs is the closer of the San Francisco Giants, Brian Wilson. He has become a YouTube sensation through out the playoffs. He has an extremely limited number of autographed cards with his SP Authentic from 2006. He also is in the Inkcredible insert set from that season so go check out your older boxes and see if you have any if these stashed away. The SPA Authentic has risen from around 20 dollars a few weeks ago to 60 dollars.

If you haven’t seen it take a moment and watch Brian Wilson’s appearance on Rome is Burning.

Panini released on Twitter today that the Randy Johnson Elite autographs were now in house. The cards look great, but left me wondering one thing. Why did they get Randy to sign on card, but couldn’t get Ben McDonald? I would love a nice Big Ben on card autograph. His one game stint in the Cape League was something I will never forget.

Sure he didn’t pan out like a lot expected, but if you are going to do an insert of him, and probably the biggest name in the set is on card, why can’t everyone be on card?

If the image above is deceptive, and there is a sticker there somewhere, I retract everything I said…..

We have had the launch of Elite Extra Edition in the last day or so, and a ton has been broken and listed on Ebay. But one card has really stuck out in particular. Jordan Swagerty‘s autographs look vaguely familiar, and they do not look anything like Jordan’s autographs from USA products. Now sometimes stickers can get swapped, but it’s for lesser player, or sometimes it’s for someone with the same name like Tony Gwynn, or Frank Thomas.

I am hoping I can get some images of Todd Cunningham’s autos, but who knows he said he wasn’t sure he was in the set until he got the contract to sign.

From time to time we want to bring a scan of a card from Wossamottau’s vault that otherwise would never see the light of day. This card is, as far as we know, the best 1/1 of the Florida Marlins Phenom that is tearing up the MILB, as we speak to have surfaced. So far no one has seen the Superfractor, and it has not hit Ebay.

With the prices that cards of Stanton, Jesus Montero, and Jason Heyward as of late, we shudder to think how high this card could go at auction right now. Heck an Ike Davis Orange Ref went over 2K last night!

Panini released some more info today about the Elite Extra Edition Baseball product coming out next month. The biggest highlight is that Albert Pujols signed 20 cards depicting him in his high school jersey to be inserted in the product, plus the FIRST EVER Aroldis Chapman certified autographs!

With one month remaining before the scheduled release of 2009 Donruss Elite Extra Edition, Panini America has released the checklist for the product that integrates draft picks, top prospects and – for the first time – baseball legends in the product.

The legends are shown in high school or college shots, some of them rarely seen before. For instance, George Brett can be seen crossing the plate in an El Segundo (Calif.) High School game, Mike Schmidt at Ohio University, Al Kaline is shown at Southern High School in Baltimore, Nolan Ryan is depicted in his delivery in a staged photo at Alvin High School and Mark Fidrych is pictured while at Worcester Academy.

Several other legends appear in Back to the Future Signatures, Elite Series Autographs and Private Signings.

“We wanted to mix a little of the old with the new without affecting the base EEE checklist, which just includes current prospects,” said EEE Brand Manager Mike Payne. “Elite Extra Edition is so much about high school and college baseball prospects. . . we just thought it would be fun to show some names from the past as they appeared at that period in their lives. Some of the older shots are better than others, but all of them capture a moment in time and provide a glimpse of the player before he made it big and, in many cases, before anyone outside his school had ever heard of him.”

One current big leaguer is also shown as a high school player: Albert Pujols, then a junior shortstop at Fort Osage High School in Independence, Mo.

Pujols hand-signed 20 copies of his Elite Series card, and reportedly was amused at seeing the nearly 12-year-old image of himself decked out in his Fort Osage Indians jersey.

Highlights of the 150-card base set include:

Cards of the first 18 players in the Autographed Rookies subset (card #’s 51-68) were sent out for on-card autographs – a first for EEE. Their parallel cards will be sticker autographs. “The intent was to make those players’ on-card Autographed Rookies as valuable as possible,” Payne said. “To do that, and keep enough autographs in the program, we opted to use stickers for the Turn of the Century parallels and for any inserts they may appear on.”

The first certified autographs of Aroldis Chapman – The 22-year-old lefthander and Cuban defector had not signed with a major league club at the time of the printing of EEE, so he is pictured in his Holguin uniform whom he played for in the Cuban National Series last year.
Some 42 first-round or supplemental first-round picks have autographs in the set
Other highlights of the product:

Pete Rose autographs and memorabilia cards
Elite Series autographs, Back to the Future Signatures and Private Signings – autographed sweet spot baseball swatch material – make their debuts
Throwback Threads – with, among others, an LSU Jared Mitchell jersey, a Brownwood (Texas) HS Shelby Miller jersey, a Mike Minor Braves jersey worn during the 2009 Arizona Fall League, an Arizona State Jason Kipnis jersey and a Millville (N.J.) HS jersey worn by Mike Trout
Yes, there will be Hot Boxes

Elite Extra Edition is scheduled to release January 20.

Panini posted the first image of an on card EEE Baseball autograph on their Twitter Page. I really commend them on this effort. Many of the first Panini on card autographs had bubbling issues, and no area designated for the autograph. The Tony Sanchez autograph that they released seems to correct both of these issues.

Hopefully they continue this quality among the rest of the on card autographs!!
